Scaling a regulated financial platform is not the same as scaling a SaaS product. Every new customer, every new transaction, every new regulatory obligation adds complexity that a fragile backend will eventually fail to absorb. For wealth management platforms operating under UK financial regulation, that is not a risk worth taking.
Fundment is a modern UK-based investment advisory platform built for financial advisers and wealth managers. They were growing fast. Their customer base was expanding. Regulatory obligations were increasing. And their existing backend architecture, built for an earlier stage of the business, needed to evolve to match where the company was going.
They came to Aegasis Labs for a partner who could redesign their backend into a modular, cloud-native foundation built for security, compliance, scalability, and long-term maintainability. We delivered: a secure, scalable API layer powering core financial operations; orchestrated, auditable workflows for regulated processes built on AWS Step Functions; automated testing and CI/CD pipelines that accelerated delivery without sacrificing stability; and hands-on technical mentoring that uplifted Fundment’s internal engineering team for the long term.
The platform Fundment operates today is built to scale. The funding milestone they achieved reflects it.
Fundment is a modern, UK-based investment advisory platform purpose-built for financial advisers and wealth managers. The platform gives advisers a centralized place to manage client portfolios, process transactions, handle onboarding, and maintain the reporting and compliance documentation that UK financial regulation demands.
It operates in a sector where the margin for technical error is narrow. Financial platforms need reliable APIs and consistent data handling. Compliance workflows have to be auditable. Security has to be systematic, not bolted on. And as the customer base grows, performance has to hold. Concurrent adviser activity across onboarding, transactions, and reporting cannot degrade the experience for anyone on the platform.
Fundment’s priority as they scaled was clear: grow quickly without ever compromising the security and compliance the business depends on. That is the mandate they brought to Aegasis Labs.
Fundment raised £45 million in a Series C funding round led by Highland Europe, with participation from ETFS Capital. The round brought Fundment’s total funding to approximately £58.7 million and valued the company at £150 million. Complete funding details can be seen Fundment Funding.
A platform that reaches Series C at a £150 million valuation, having reported its first full-year profit, is not one held back by its own infrastructure. The technical foundation matters. Aegasis Labs helped build it.
Wealth management platforms operate under a level of scrutiny that most software products never encounter. UK financial regulation demands auditability. Regulators expect evidence. Clients and the advisers serving them expect reliability. These are not aspirational standards. They are baseline requirements for staying in business.
For Fundment, rapid customer growth was accelerating the timeline on every one of these demands simultaneously. More concurrent users meant more load on APIs that had not been designed for that scale. More regulatory obligations meant more complex workflows that needed to be traceable, auditable, and recoverable if something went wrong mid-process. More product development meant more releases, and a manual testing process that was slowing the team down and increasing regression risk with every cycle.
The fragmentation problem was real. Financial platforms that grow without deliberate architectural investment tend to accumulate the same set of technical problems: onboarding, transactions, and reporting handled by different services with inconsistent validation, inconsistent access controls, and no unified orchestration layer. Each of those inconsistencies is an operational risk. In a regulated environment, operational risk has a compliance cost.
There was also a team capability dimension. Fundment’s internal engineers were capable but needed exposure to the architectural patterns and engineering practices that would allow them to maintain and extend a more sophisticated backend without external dependency. A partner who delivered a better system and left was only solving half the problem.
The stakes were clear. A backend that could not scale reliably, could not demonstrate auditability, and could not be safely extended by an internal team was a direct constraint on Fundment’s ability to grow and on their ability to satisfy the compliance obligations that regulated growth in financial services demands.
Aegasis Labs redesigned Fundment’s backend from the inside out, building a modular, cloud-ready foundation with secure APIs, orchestrated financial workflows, automated testing infrastructure, and the engineering mentorship to make it sustainable long after the engagement ended.
A Secure, Scalable API Layer
The foundation of everything else was getting the API layer right. We built a secure, scalable API infrastructure supporting core financial and compliance operations across the platform, with versioned endpoints, request and response validation, and role-based access controls standardized across services. Predictable performance under load was a hard requirement. The redesigned layer sustains higher concurrency with stable latency and consistent error tolerance, regardless of how many advisers are active simultaneously.
Versioned endpoints also create a clean integration surface for future partner and product expansion. New capabilities can be added without breaking existing contracts.
Orchestrated, Auditable Financial Workflows
Regulated financial workflows including onboarding sequences, transaction processing, and compliance reporting do not just need to work. They need to be provably correct, recoverable when something goes wrong, and auditable after the fact. We integrated AWS Step Functions to orchestrate these complex multi-step processes as stateful, auditable state machines with built-in retries, compensations, and immutable activity logs.
When a regulator asks for evidence of how a transaction was processed or when an onboarding workflow completed, the answer is in the logs, complete, traceable, and tamper-evident. This is an operational posture that reduces risk in practice.
Automated Testing and CI/CD Pipelines
Manual testing processes slow teams down and introduce release risk in inverse proportion to each other. The slower the process, the higher the risk when something gets through. We introduced automated testing and validation pipelines using Pytest and Docker, with environment parity across development and production and CI/CD pipelines that run tests automatically on every change.
The result is a delivery process where new features move from development to release faster, with regression risk managed systematically rather than manually. Iteration cycles shorten. Release confidence increases. The team ships more without breaking what is already working.
Native AWS Infrastructure for Secure, Scalable Execution
The full infrastructure stack runs on native AWS services. Lambda for serverless execution, API Gateway for managed API exposure, SQS for reliable message queuing, and CloudWatch for monitoring and observability. Infrastructure is codified, making environments reproducible and changes auditable. The architecture scales with Fundment’s growth without requiring manual infrastructure management at each step.
Technical Mentoring for Long-Term Engineering Capability
Delivering a better system and walking away creates dependency. We embedded best-practice engineering patterns including clean code principles, version control discipline, and modular system design directly into Fundment’s internal team through hands-on mentoring throughout the engagement. The goal was a team that could maintain, extend, and evolve the new backend confidently and independently.
Technologies:
The Fundment engagement followed Aegasis Labs’ four-step delivery approach, structured to transform a growth-stage financial platform without disrupting live operations:
Aegasis Labs delivered a backend transformation that shows up in Fundment’s operational metrics, their compliance posture, and their engineering team’s ability to keep building.
The Fundment engagement shows what Aegasis Labs delivers when a regulated, growth-stage platform needs to scale without compromise: secure infrastructure, auditable workflows, and an engineering team left more capable than when the engagement started.
